Portsmouth Academy have been announced as the first winners of the 2018 Rhino Schools Competition, after they were drawn from a number of initial participants. The competition sees the Varsity Match team up with Rhino to give schools the opportunity to win a rugby skills coaching session with the England Coaching Team at Twickenham Stadium.
“The Portsmouth Academy and myself are over the moon to be confirmed the first winners of the Rhino Schools Varsity Match Competition. Our pupils are looking forward to their second ever season at the school and to a new and fantastic opportunity to visit Twickenham”, said Andy Tart, Head of Boys Games.
“Now this comes with the chance to be coached by some of England’s coaching team, this is that something extra that we cannot help but feel really excited about”.
Schools that book trips to The Varsity Match for 20 or more pupils will be entered into a free prize draw to win one of the three remaining special coaching clinics at the stadium in-between the women’s and men’s Varsity Matches on Thursday 6th December 2018.
School girls and boys will get a taste of the national team’s approach to the game at the annual clash between Oxford and Cambridge at Twickenham on a specialist Rhino-Turf pitch with Rhino training balls and equipment.
In previous years competition winners have had the chance to meet and train with England Head Coach Eddie Jones, England Pathway Coach Russell Earnshaw and England’s 2003 World Cup-winning captain Martin Johnson.
Commenting on the initiative, Rhino CEO Reg Clark said: “We are proud to continue to support this initiative to be encouraging as many schools as possible to enjoy a Varsity Match day at Twickenham and to win an amazing coaching Experience”, whilst, The Varsity Match Co-ordinator Jeremy Macklin stated: “The Varsity Match is often the first-time school children get to visit the home of England Rugby and this will make an extra special day for those taking part in the training sessions”.
Further winners will be announced over the next few months. Discounted school tickets are now available for just £10 per junior which includes entry to both the Women’s and Men’s Varsity Matches. Plus one adult goes free for every 10 pupils booked.
