Oxford University Rugby Club have elected Hazel Ellender (Pembroke) as their 2019 women’s captain.
Ellender, who studies Philosophy and Theology at Pembroke College, has won two Blues, starting at prop in both the 2017 and 2018 Varsity Matches.
Speaking on her appointment, she said, “It’s really humbling to have been voted in as Captain. The club has been an integral part of my experience at Oxford and it took a lot of steps forward last year.
“I’m looking to continue to push us all to develop as individuals and as a team in the interest of winning back the trophy in December. I’m beyond excited for what the coming year has in store for OURFC.”
Hazel will be supported by Team Secretary Shekina Opara who started at lock in the 2018 Varsity Match and studies Ancient and Modern History at Keble College.
The pair replace outgoing captain Abby D’Cruz and Team Secretary Susannah Rees.
The 2018 Varsity Matches saw Cambridge lift the Rhino Trophy in the 30th anniversary year of the Women’s Varsity Match with a 5-8 win. In the Men’s Varsity Match Oxford stopped Cambridge’s winning streak with a convincing 38-16 victory.
The Varsity Match 2019 has been confirmed for Thursday 12 December at Twickenham Stadium.
Adult tickets are available from £20/£40, students from £15 and juniors from £10.
